Thoroughly Modern Millie - Tuesday 29 January - Saturday 2 February 2008
Celebrating its centenary year, local multi-award-winning BROS Theatre Company returns to Richmond Theatre after their delightful production of Singin’ in the Rain, with this all-singing, all-dancing, fun family show.
A high-spirited musical romp Thoroughly Modern Millie won Best New Musical at the 2002 Tony Awards when it was first produced, and had all of New York dancing the Charleston. It’s the zany new 1920s musical that took Broadway by storm!
Taking place in New York City in 1922, Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of young Millie Dillmount, who has just moved to the city in search of a new life for herself. It’s a New York full of intrigue and jazz - a time when women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behaviour were changing forever.
As Millie flaps, taps and Charlestons her way through the roaring twenties, she learns there’s more to being modern than the latest fashions, bobbed hair and a boss who is a rich, eligible bachelor. There’s a little thing called love that
never seems to go out of style.
A must-see to shake off the winter blues.

The Vortex - Monday 4 - Saturday 9 February 2008

Felicity Kendal, Dan Stevens and Phoebe Nichols star in The Vortex
TV and stage icon Felicity Kendal leads a star cast as the glamorous socialite Florence Lancaster in Noël Coward’s renowned play about the frivolous nature and narcissism of London’s late 1920s aristocracy.
Against a backdrop of glittering decadence, The Vortex centres on the tempestuous relationship of Florence and her hedonistic son Nicky. With the Mother’s desire for younger men driven by her refusal to grow old, and the Son’s obsession with competing for her love, Florence Lancaster’s insatiable needs are fundamentally the crux of the ‘Vortex of beastliness’ that drives Nicky to his demons.
Much loved for her illustrious television and stage career, which includes The Good Life and Rosemary and Thyme, as well as her sell-out success in Fallen Angels in London’s West End, Felicity Kendal returns to the stage in this fantastic brand new production of Noël Coward’s highly acclaimed play. Joining her is Dan Stevens, best known for his outstanding performance in the BBC drama The Line of Beauty, Phoebe Nichols (Cordelia Flyte from Brideshead Revisited) and Annette Badland (Cutting It).
Also appearing are Vivien Keene, Daniel Pirrie, Paul Ridley, Timothy Speyer, Cressida Trew and Barry Stanton.
Directed by Peter Hall, one of the UK’s most prolific and prestigious directors, this new production is not to be missed.

In The Club - Tuesday 12 - Saturday 16 February 2008

A new comedy by RICHARD BEAN Directed by David Grindley
British favourite James Fleet (Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Vicar of Dibley) is joined by a hugely talented cast including
The Bill’s Huw Higginson in Richard Bean’s ‘wildly inventive’ (The Guardian) and hilariously witty new comedy.
Hapless MEP Philip Wardrobe has a busy day ahead of him, balancing his less-than-irreproachable political career with his attempts to start a family.
As he prepares for his girlfriend to fly in from Kettering for an afternoon of ‘frolics’, his plan to be voted President of the European Parliament is foiled at every turn by his
unpredictable colleagues. Uncouth Yorkshiremen, irate Turks and amorous Frenchwomen all play a part, to say nothing of the mysterious man in the linen cupboard.
Sit back and enjoy the door-slamming shenanigans as Philip’s personal and political lives collide in a Strasbourg hotel suite, with uproarious results.

And Then There Were None is considered by many to be one of the greatest mystery novels ever written and Agatha Christie’s own stage adaptation of this dark and captivating tale is guaranteed to thrill and enthral.

In this powerful drama of passion versus loyalty, Hester Collyer, the daughter of a clergyman and wife of a judge, is foundering in the closing stages of a hopeless affair. Freddie Page, her lover, a handsome but shallow ex- battle of Britain pilot, is out of his depth in their relationship, overwhelmed by the strength of an emotion he is incapable of reciprocating.

She Stoops To Conquer - Tuesday 18 - Saturday 22 March 2008
By Oliver Goldsmith
With a new prologue and epilogue by Bryony Lavery
Richmond audiences are about to be wooed and wowed by Oliver Goldsmith’s classic comedy of manners brimming with marvellous humour and humanity, brought to us by the producers of theatrical triumphs To Kill A Mockingbird and Of Mice and Men. She Stoops to Conquer is a rumbustious story about two young men and their attempts to court two young ladies. Sounds straightforward? Think again. A number of delicious deceits, clever schemes, comic ruses and riotous turns of plot must be played out if the two pending marriages are to conclude happily. Along the way, there is an abundance of merry mix-ups, bawdy dialogue, much sly satire of the times and one of the great characters of the stage, Tony Lumpkin.
Leading the cast is Liza Goddard, who has toured extensively in classic drama from Wilde to Ayckbourne. Joining her is Colin Baker, one of the country’s best-loved actors.

Brief Lives - Tuesday 25 - Saturday 29 March 2008
As the curtain lifted on the world premiere of BRIEF LIVES at Hampstead Theatre forty years ago, its global impact could not have been anticipated. It took the theatrical world by storm and the winning acting and directing team, Roy Dotrice and Patrick Garland, took it around the world.
This sensational revival is already exciting the nation’s media, even before the curtain has risen again on acting legend Roy Dotrice, playing the lovable character of John Aubrey. A reclusive antiquarian Aubrey takes the audience on a nostalgic and hysterical journey through the 17th century and gives his unique take on days-gone-by with all the bits the history books missed out.

and over the years Merrick is changed from obscene and pitiful freak to the witty favourite of the aristocracy. But can he ever truly be accepted for who he is beneath his deformities and become a man like any other?

Simon MacCorkindale - best known for his role as consultant Harry Harper in the BBC’s Casualty, the well-known hit TV series’ Falcon Crest and Manimal, and his roles in several major films, including Riddle of the Sands - and Michael Praed, veteran of the television classics Robin of Sherwood and Dynasty, star in this audacious revival of Antony Shaffer’s masterpiece. THE WOMAN HATER by Fanny Burney Wednesday 19 December 2007 - Saturday 2 February 2008

Fanny Burney is famous – as a novelist and as a woman of letters. Yet she also wrote plays and our production of The Woman Hater will be, incredibly, the world premiere of her 1802 play.
Jilted on the verge of marriage, Sir Roderick spurns all contact with all women. The woman who jilted him, wooed with verses by another, became Lady Smatter and is, she feels, at the centre of literary life, peppering her every sentence with misremembered quotations. Sir Roderick has severed relations with his sister Eleonora because she presumed to marry Wilmot, Lady Smatter’s brother. That marriage had now foundered over suspected adultery. Years have now passed, children have grown up and heirs need to be found. In this world of antagonism and suspicion is it possible for love to blossom and hate to wither?

Next Door's Baby Wednesday 6 February - Saturday 8 March 2008
by Book by Bernie Gaughan. Music and Lyrics by Matthew Strachan
Set in 1950s Dublin, Next Door's Baby is an earthy tale of feuding mothers, jealousy, and family secrets. As a Bonny Baby competition deepens the rift between the neighbouring Hennessys amd O'Briens, we learn nothing in either tiny terraced house is quite as it seems.
As a premiere production of a witty, poignant show with lovely songs, written by husband and wife team. Next Door's Baby is for anyone who ever had a family.
Cast: Peter Basham, Stephen Carlile, Clare Louise Connolly, Robert Gill, Louise Gold, Elinor Lawless, Brenda Longman, Riona O'Connor, Vincent Shiels and Emily Sills.

Chains of Dew by Susan Glaspell Wednesday 12 March - Saturday 26 April 2008
The British premiere of a play first produced in 1922 by the Provincetown Players.
A tale of poetry, birth control and bobbed hair by one of America's finest writers. Will the liberal intelligentsia of New York manage to lure Seymore Standish, poet, away from his boring Banking life in Bluff City, where bridge and golf hold sway and where the League for Birth Control has not even a foothold?
Maybe though Seymore's wife and mother have surprises in store for both husbands and friends? Maybe Seymore is not quite what he would seem? And what do those dolls tell us?
A witty and surprising comedy by the author of The Verge and Inheritors.

Glaspell Shorts: Trifles, Supressed Desires & The Outside Monday 7 - Saturday 19 April 2008
Three short plays by Susan Glaspell.
Trifles is, perhaps, Glaspell's masterpiece. In the aftermath of a death, possibly a murder, the authorities of law and order investigate, but it is the two wives, accompanying their husbands, who deduce the most from the trifles in the kitchen as their men go about their important business. This play is a gem. One of the best short plays ever written.
Supressed Desires, written with her husband George Cram Cook, takes a very funny look at the then new vogue of Freudian analysis with hilarious results.
The Outside is set in a disused life-saving station, now belonging to Mrs Patrick as a refuge from life, a sanctuary on the edge of existence. But when the former life savers return with a body to be revived, the owner and her companion are forced to re-assess life on the edge. "The most original of these early works." - Christopher Bigsby.

De Monfort by Joanna Baillie Wednesday 30 April - Saturday 31 May 2008
De Monfort is consumed by his hatred of Rezenvelt. He is in the grip of a passion over which he seems to have little control.
In 1798 Joanna Baillie, the genteel daughter of a Presbyterian Minister, published the first three of her plays on the passions. They were received with enormous enthusiasm. She was hailed by Sir Walter Scott and Lord Bryon, Kemble first performed De Monfort, then Edmund Kean. "Write me more Jane de Monforts" said the great Sarah Siddons.
This is a play of daunting power and great language. It is unlike anything we have presented before. Another real Orange Tree rediscovery of an unjustly forgotten writer that must not be missed.

Last Train to Nibroc by Arlene Hutton Wednesday 4 - Saturday 21 June 2008
"I didn't know you but now we're riding the same train. And no matter what happens, there will always have been a time that we rode the train together."
It is Christmas week in 1940 on a train somewhere west of Chicago. Raleigh takes a seat next to May. She is sincere and honest in her beliefs. He is a teasing young man in uniform with pretensions of being a writer. Can such a brief encounter lead to romance or will revelation and difference come between them? A truly endearing wartime romance. Katie Henry is a trainee director at the Orange Tree Theatre.
