With an illustrious 30-year history and an extensive repertoire Merton Concert Band specialises in big band favourites, show music and light classics, to entertain listeners both young and old.
The band was formed in 1981 and was the brainchild of a former mayor of the London Borough of Merton. The band has had strong links with the famous Mantovani Orchestra through its star trumpeter, Stan Newsome, who was the founding conductor of the band. Stan died in 1989, but the band still maintains his philosphy that ‘the audience should be entertained, not educated’. The band is now conducted by Arnold Bibby.
